Colchester Borough Council has scooped a ‘Gold Award’ in recognition of the way it manages its address information database.

The Gold Performance Award is only given to organisations that have consistently reached and maintained the highest standards in national tests on data excellence, supplying regular updates to the national hub which manages address data submitted by local authorities in England and Wales.

The GeoPlace Conference and Awards, held in London on 9 May, highlight examples of best practice and outstanding data management by local authorities. Land, property, street and address information is used to connect different services across the council – giving communities and individuals a ‘property-level view’ of the services available to them. Without it, and without the work of Address Custodians, the high-quality data that is essential for the efficient and effective operation of services and utilities in Great Britain would not exist.

The Gold Performance Award for Address Information formally recognises the authoritative, valued nature of an authority’s addressing database and the skill and hard work that goes into maintaining a constantly-changing accurate dataset.

In announcing the Award to Colchester Borough Council, Nick Chapallaz, Managing Director of GeoPlace, said: "Every year, it gives us immense pleasure to highlight the work being done by Street and Address Custodians.

“Colchester Borough Council has set an example for data management that deserves recognition on a national stage. Managing addressing information data to this standard takes skill, and commitment. The Gold Award recognises excellence and is an appreciation of the effort going into an often-overlooked process, but one that delivers local and national benefits – truly bringing location to life.”

Cllr Gerard Oxford, Portfolio Holder for Customers, added: “We are always striving to embrace state-of-the-art digital services to achieve the best possible experience for our customers – so I am absolutely delighted the council has received this outstanding accolade.

“Winning a Gold Performance Award reflects our performance and commitment to customer-focused delivery of services, while also recognising the careful-work and expertise of the team responsible for collating and maintaining the borough’s address data.”
