Visit Colchester is delighted to be working with HBO and Visit Essex to bring part of the global phenomena that is Game of Thrones to Colchester!
As both Britain’s First City and the first Roman Capital, Colchester is among one of four locations across the country chosen by HBO to represent the Game of Thrones story in the UK.
Having pitched to host the sign, Visit Colchester hopes residents and visitors will have fun matching events and characters from Colchester’s rich and bloody history of invasion, revolt and siege to the show’s storylines (Queen Boudica = Daenerys Targaryen, anyone?), while our very own Colchester Castle, the largest Norman Keep in Europe, built on the foundations of a huge Roman temple destroyed by Queen Boudica, is of course reminiscent of the great fortresses that feature in the show.
Fans of the show will find the sign prominently located at the front of Castle Park, at the south east corner of Colchester Castle. This location is perfect to snap a #GameofThrones selfie with the Castle in the background but don’t forget to tag in @VisitColchester and @VisitEssex!
As an added bonus the Visit Colchester team in Hollytrees Museum, close by the sign in Castle Park, will be giving away free Game of Thrones stress balls to fans who pop into see them today, but make sure you hurry as stocks are limited!

Cllr Mark Cory, Leader of Colchester Borough Council said: “It is a tremendous coup for Colchester to be chosen for the site of the ‘Essos’ sign. I know there are many massive fans of the series around Colchester and I encourage them to come and take a look.
“I would also like to appeal to fans of Game of Thrones to take some time here and get to know Colchester. Come, visit the sign and find out more about Britain’s First City and our parallels to the Game of Thrones world!”
