Cracking Easter fun at the Castle – pay once and receive unlimited entry!

PUBLISHED: 22 March 2023

This Easter, head deep into the atmospheric Roman vaults of Colchester Castle and soak up over 2,000 years of history on a guided tour. Challenge the family to climb the biggest Norman spiral staircase in England and immerse yourselves in tales of victory, defeat and the hard-fought battles that have made Colchester the city it is today!

From the 1-16 April, you’ll also be able to take part in plenty of fun additional activities designed to keep minds both young and old entertained!

Try and beat the Castle’s Jolly Jester by taking part a fun activity trail! Get ready to giggle and have a go at solving the clues to reveal the riddles. From Roman donkey hats to finding out more about medieval Jesters, this fun and interactive trail will lead to a wonderful prize at the end for those that complete it.

Look out for some very special costumed characters wandering around the museum. Ask them questions and listen as they tell you more about life during Roman and Medieval times. They may even challenge you to a game or two.

Then, when you are ready to take some time out, let imaginations run wild and enjoy the Castle’s craft and games room filled with easter themed activities. You can even time a visit around a storytelling session, the perfect antidote to a busy day.

And remember: Colchester residents, pay just once and receive unlimited free entry to the Castle for a whole year with a Castle Pass! Non-residents can also pay a small fee to upgrade their ticket.

Councillor Pam Cox, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Heritage, said: “There’s never been a better time to gather the family and start enjoying a year of exhibitions and displays including free entry to the Castle’s new blockbuster exhibition opening this summer, Gladiators: A Day at the Roman Games. Have fun beating the Jolly Jester, meeting characters from the past and most importantly spending time together during Colchester’s Year of Celebration.”
