Ukrainian flag raised above Colchester

Colchester Borough Council has raised the Ukrainian flag in solidarity with Ukrainian people today, Friday 25 March.

The Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Robert Davidson, Cllr Simon Crow showed their solidarity as the Ukrainian flag flies over Colchester Castle and Colchester Town Hall today.

Cllr Robert Davidson, Mayor of Colchester, said: “Colchester stands shoulder to shoulder with the Ukrainian people and condemn in the strongest terms possible Russia’s invasion. I hope that by raising the flag we convey our support to the people of Ukraine and show that we stand with them, demonstrating our respect for their country and our sympathy for its plight as they bravely fight for their freedom, their future.”

Cllr Simon Crow, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio holder for Environment and Sustainability, said: “Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine who have suffered, are suffering and will suffer as a result of the attacks from Russia. We will do all we can to support the ongoing efforts being coordinated by Essex County Council and have pledged our commitment to support and welcome refugees to the borough.”

The people of Colchester stand with the people of Ukraine in the face of Russia's unprovoked attack on freedom and democracy.
