Free ‘Healthy Body Healthy Mind’ Course

PUBLISHED: 15 March 2019

Leisure World Colchester is partnering with Health in Mind (North East Essex Improving Access to Psychological Therapy NHS Service) to launch the first ever ‘Healthy Body Healthy Mind’ programme, for adults living with mild to moderate stress, anxiety and/or low mood.

The free 4-session course aims to develop your knowledge of psychological aspects of wellbeing and activity, together with a gentle introduction to exercise. Sessions will be based at Leisure World Colchester and the first programme starts on Friday 5 April 2019.

Dr Rebecca Clodfelter, Long Term Conditions Lead Psychologist, said: “It is common to think that the mind and body are separate. Many NHS services are set up to deal with either physical health or mental wellbeing. However, what you do with your body can have such a powerful effect on mental wellbeing (and vice versa!). It has been great to work in partnership, with Leisure World Colchester, with the aim of supporting more people with both their physical and mental health needs.”

Cllr Tina Bourne, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: “It’s widely known that exercise enables our bodies to produce chemicals in the brain that improves our sleep, which in turn reduces stress. Whilst many of us are aware of these benefits it can be hard for us to take the first steps to increase our day to day activity. We hope that this new course will be that stepping stone for many residents to improve their wellbeing.

“This course supports the great Livewell campaign work that the Council is already doing, so I’m really pleased to be working with the NHS Health in Mind Service to support this pilot course and look forward to seeing the programme develop.”
