Cost of living support
Colchester City Council is providing support for residents facing the cost of living crisis.
Colchester Borough Council is pleased to announce that St Mary’s and St John’s multi-storey car parks in Colchester town centre will get a much-needed deep clean.
St Mary’s and St John’s multi-storey car parks are popular venues for workers, shoppers and visitors to Colchester, seeing a total of 767,002 vehicles parked during 2018.
Work will begin to clean the stone and brick, alongside graffiti and chewing gum removal, on Tuesday 19 March in St John’s Car Park and around Tuesday 25 March in St Mary’s Car Park.
The cleaning will take approximately 5-6 days. Both car parks will remain open throughout the deep clean and disruption will be kept to a minimum, however there will be a reduction in spaces whilst the cleaning take place and motorists are asked not to leave their vehicles in St Johns Car Park overnight to enable the works to take place.
A five-stage deep cleaning process will be used to transform the car park surfaces, which includes treatment to remove the deep-rooted stains such as oil, to maximise the life of the floor and ensuring its kept in optimum condition. Water pressure washers will also be used to remove the build-up of dirt and mud from the walls.
Councillor Mike Lilley, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Planning, Public Safety and Licensing, said: “First impressions count and while people don’t consciously notice a clean car park, they definitely notice a dirty one. 767,002 visitors a year creates a lot of wear and tear, and it’s time they received some well-earned TLC.
“By giving our multi-storey car parks a deep clean, followed by regular cleaning from our Zones Team, we hope that customers will feel more confident about leaving their cars for extended periods of time, enabling them to make the most of the fantastic shopping, cultural and dining opportunities Colchester has to offer; helping to create a Better Colchester.”
Better Colchester is a dynamic two-year action plan to help deliver the aims and objectives of the council’s overarching strategic plan. Around £2 million has been set aside to deliver proposals that will make Colchester an even better place to live, work in and visit. Find out more at www.colchester.gov.uk/bettercolchester
