Colchester Museums is thrilled to announce that Colchester Castle has been shortlisted for a Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award.
The Castle has been shortlisted in the Best Accessible Museum category, on the strength of its ongoing work to make the museum site accessible to all, the quality of information on its website and the staff’s knowledge and support to visitors.
The Best Accessible Museum category celebrates museums making excellent efforts to include families with children or young people who have special educational needs and disabilities.
Charity Kids in Museums has run a prestigious annual award for 16 years, recognising the most family friendly heritage sites in the UK. It is the only museum award to be judged by families, making this shortlist achievement very special.
A panel of museum experts whittled down hundreds of nominations to a shortlist of 16 heritage attractions. Over the summer holidays, Colchester Castle will now be visited by undercover family judges who will assess the shortlisted museums against the Kids in Museums Manifesto. Their experiences will decide a winner for each award category and an overall winner of the Family Friendly Museum Award 2022.
Councillor Pam Cox, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Heritage for Colchester Borough Council, said: “What a wonderful accolade this is. Colchester Museums welcomes thousands of families over the course of a year and strives hard to ensure everyone can make the most of our great heritage. The team at Colchester Museums are committed to ensuring our visitors have the best possible experience across all three of its sites in Colchester.”
Colchester Castle is now vying against several other museums for this prestigious accolade which will be unveiled at a glittering ceremony in London in October.
