Colchester Events announces ‘Music of the Spheres’ arts spectacular coming to Colchester this July

PUBLISHED: 21 June 2021

Colchester Events, in association with Eye Music, is staging a brand new, spectacular music and dance event at Colchester’s Castle Park this July.

‘Music of the Spheres’ has thrilled audiences around the UK and Europe, including at Latitude and the Henley Festival. Now, with support from Arts Council England, the event is making its Essex debut at Castle Park, Colchester on Saturday 24th July 2021.

Visitors will experience breath-taking performances of contemporary music and dance designed by Eye Music a charitable trust founded by composers Lawrence Casserley and Simon Desorgher.

Claire Mera-Nelson, Director, Music, Arts Council England, said: “Music of the Spheres is an amazing show, mixing new music and dance in outdoor spaces. I’m delighted that – thanks to National Lottery funding we can support Eye Music Trust to take it to more communities across the country, like Colchester. The tour is a wonderful opportunity for so many more people to safely engage with contemporary music that has such an unusual twist to it.”

Each 90-minute performance starts with dancers and musicians within land-based, transparent spheres and domes moving around the audience – enabling socially-distanced performances and providing a great theatrical spectacle. Musicians perform on flute, violin and accordion, as well as more unusual instruments from around the world such as Tibetan Singing Bowls and a slate xylophone.

The highlight of the event will see a giant Sphere, the size of a four-storey building, launched onto the Park’s boating lake. Inside, aerial dancer Claire Crook will spin and spiral on silks suspended from the centre. The Sphere performs a ballet on the lake as it moves over the surface of the water controlled by the Eye Music technical team.
The finale of each show also takes place within giant Spheres and Domes set to new music composed and performed by Simon Desorgher on the flute.

There will be three 90-minute performances throughout the afternoon and early evening at 12.30pm, 3pm and 5.30pm. Ticket holders can bring chairs and blankets and enjoy their own picnic, or pre order Afternoon Tea style sandwiches and Cream Teas from ‘Café In The Park’ when booking their tickets.

Cllr Sue Lissimore, Deputy Leader of Colchester Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: “It is our ambition to bring more arts and cultural events to Colchester and I really welcome the addition of this exciting new show to Colchester Events summer programme. Our highest priority is to provide safe events that enable social distancing and this event allows us to do that. Attracting visitors to the town to enjoy themselves at well-managed events will be a welcome boost not only to local businesses but also to the well-being of so many residents and visitors to Colchester.”

Tickets are on sale now at £5.30 single admission; £20 for a group ticket for 4 and £3 for under 12s and over 65s. Ticket holders can bring a picnic or pre order afternoon teas, sandwiches and more from ‘Café In The Park’ when booking their tickets.
