Colchester Castle to re-open its historic doors

PUBLISHED: 7 July 2020

Date issued: 13 July 2020

After many months with its historic doors closed to the public, Colchester Castle is delighted to announce that it will re-open on Thursday, 23 July.

Like many other museums and attractions, when its doors are swung open things may look a little different, but this is to ensure everyone is kept and feels safe during this unsettled time.

Anyone wishing to visit the Castle will be asked to call ahead and book a timed slot to visit. This is to make sure that the Castle doesn’t have too many people in the building at one time, and that everyone has plenty of time to enjoy their visit.

The new timed entry slots are super easy to book, simply pick a time between 10.00-16.00 (Mon-Sat) and 11.00-16.00 (Sun) and call us on 01206 282939. Phone lines will be open from 10am on Monday 13 July. You will still need to call if you have a Resident Pass, just make sure you have your pass details handy.

On arrival you may be asked to queue until your reserved time slot starts, so we advise arriving no more than five minutes before your booked time. Markers will be in place and you will be asked to abide by social distancing rules to ensure the comfort and safety of everyone.

Once inside the Castle your journey through history will be directed by a new one-way system. Don’t worry, you will still have plenty of time to stop and look at the exhibits as always – we just ask you to be mindful of other visitors and remember to socially distance. Please note some interactive exhibits may not be available, but the team will be trying to keep things as normal as possible. Hand sanitiser stations will be available along the way, too, and new signage will guide visitors safely through their time exploring the museum.

We are aware that things may look a little different, but the warm and friendly Castle team will be on hand to welcome everyone.

Once your visit is over, the Castle shop will be open providing a wide selection of gifts and souvenirs, many at pocket-money prices.

Contactless payments will be encouraged wherever possible and screens will be installed around the tills. The shop area is small, so visitors will be asked to be patient and observe social distancing guidelines.

We are also delighted to announce that our Escape Experience is back from the 13 July for private groups of up to six people. These bookings must be a ‘bubble’ or family group from the same household. We have worked hard to make this safe for everyone, and there are a limited number of dates and times available. Please call 01206 282939 for more details. Cost £60 per session.

Additionally, we can welcome private groups of up to six people, which must be a ‘bubble’ or family group, to enjoy a special gallery tour and time to look at the displays, between the 13 and 22 July. Availability is limited, please call us for more details and to book.

Councillor Julie Young, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Performance and Deputy Leader of the Council said: “We are thrilled to be re-opening on the 23 July. The friendly Castle team are looking forward to greeting everyone once again and sharing the Castle’s many treasures with visitors. With the school summer holidays approaching, it’s time to #LoveColchesterCastle again and we look forward to seeing you all soon.”
