Colchester to continue annual tree giveaway for 16th Year

PUBLISHED: 14 February 2023

Residents are being given the opportunity to help spruce up their gardens with Colchester City Council’s annual tree giveaway.

The Trees for Years programme, now in its 16th year, will give away 15,000 free native trees, shrubs and fruit bushes to residents. The plants have all been chosen for their ability to promote wildlife in gardens and value to our local bee population.

The scheme is part of the Colchester Woodland and Biodiversity Project, which aims to develop a greener city for future generations. The programme is supported by idverde, the council’s grounds maintenance contractor.

There is a click and collect system in place, allowing residents to select their trees (maximum 4 per household), collection point and timeslot via an online form. The scheme is open to residents who live within the Colchester City boundary. We recommend that you bring along a bag or container for your plants.

The trees, plants and shrubs will be available at the following locations:
  • Saturday, 25 February: Tiptree Leisure World
  • Monday, 27 February: Marks Tey Village Hall
  • Wednesday, 1 March: Colchester Sports Park
  • Friday, 3 March: Colchester Leisure World

Trees available include Red & Yellow Dogwoods, Silver Birch, Hazel, Field Maple, Raspberry, Blackcurrant, Crab Apple, Lavender and Box. All trees are bare-root and range in height from 50cm to 1.2m. Residents can also access a free planting guide online.

Cllr Steph Nissen, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability said: “The Trees for Years scheme is a vital part of our commitment to the environment, helping residents to make their own spaces a haven for wildlife, and in turn ensuring that Colchester is a green city for future generations.”
