‘Big Week’ of activities for over-50s in Colchester

PUBLISHED: 25 February 2022

An exciting week of activities is coming to Colchester, to encourage older adults to get active.

Colchester Borough Council is working in partnership with Independent Age and other local organisations to host the Big Week, a programme of fun events from 14 – 19 March 2022.

Activities will be hosted at several locations and are aimed at the 50+ age group. A final free all-day event will be held at Firstsite on Saturday 19 March 2022, International Day of Happiness, to showcase the impressive array of sports and activities on offer across the borough of Colchester.

Councillor Beverley Oxford, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: “Many older people have been significantly impacted by the pandemic. We recognise that a large section of our community still feel lonely and excluded. It’s important for us to provide this community with extra help to get them out and about, enjoying life again.

“The Big Week is the perfect opportunity to help older people to rediscover pastimes and interests, reconnect with old friends, make new friends and discover the possibilities that our great borough has to offer. I would encourage any over-50s to come along ang give them a try.”

The Big Week is offering the opportunity for the 50+ age group to:

  • Try out (or rediscover!) a new sport or activity, with expert support on hand
  • Take part in five free taster sessions
  • Talk to local organisations about groups and sessions they run across the Borough
  • Try out a diverse range of arts, crafts and hobbies.
  • Get a Free bike check and join in with guided bike rides or walks

This project has been part funded by Colchester Borough Homes’ community fund.

The full timetable of activities will be available here: http://www.colchester.gov.uk/big-week
