New allotments open in Colchester

PUBLISHED: 15 December 2021

A new allotment site officially opened at Kirby Drive, Colchester, yesterday (14 December 2021), for the community to grow fruit and vegetables.

Run by Colchester Borough Council, the plots at Kirby Drive are now ready for cultivation after the site was opened by the cabinet member for Communities, Cllr Beverley Oxford, yesterday.

Cllr Beverley Oxford, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: “It’s a pleasure to open the new allotments at Kirby Drive – I know that the new allotment holders will get much satisfaction from cultivating their own plot of land, as well as a good crop of fruit and vegetables.

“Allotments are excellent for contributing to a year-round healthy lifestyle and help to promote sustainability and well-being. Gardening is a great way of exercising and staying health, making friends, and getting involved in the community.”

A total of 38 plots have been created by Taylor Wimpey, as part of 700 new home housing development at the former Severalls Hospital site in north Colchester.

Allotments can help to protect the environment as they can be a habitat for wildlife such as birds, insects and small animals, and the use of practices including composting and rainwater harvesting are encouraged.

Colchester Borough Council has over 1100 allotment plots across 19 allotment sites in Colchester. Anyone over the age of 18 years is welcome to rent a plot. To find out more information about the allotments or to rent a space, go to: colchester.gov.uk/allotments/apply-for-an-allotment/
