Give the gift of history this Christmas: Adopt an object from the Colchester Museums collection

PUBLISHED: 6 December 2021

This Christmas, consider giving a gift that will not only delight its recipient, but will also help protect thousands of years of local and global history. Gift a Colchester Museums object adoption to the history enthusiast in your life or simply treat yourself!

Colchester Museums are guardians of some of Colchester’s finest historic buildings and help preserve a vast array of historic treasures including objects, artefacts and specimens including Roman jewellery, pottery and weaponry to Natural Science collections spanning over 2,000 years. From December 2021, you can now adopt items from this vast collection and play your own small part in helping preserve some of Colchester’s finest treasures for future generations. Funds raised go to Colchester Museums Development Foundation, helping to support the preservation of Colchester Museums’ historic buildings and collections.

Adopting an object is simple and can be bought online. Simply head here and choose your desired donation level. With prices ranging from £10-£500 there is something to suit all budgets. Next, browse the stunning objects which range from Roman jewellery, Roman Face Pots, the famous Colchester Mercury to a Viking axe, a Lemming or even a bust of the Emperor Caligula. With each adoption enjoy special benefits including Curator talks and Q&A’s, certificates, and invitations to VIP events.

Councillor Darius Laws, Portfolio Holder for Economy, Business and Heritage for Colchester Borough Council said, “We are thrilled to be able to open up Colchester Museums collections to the public. Our adopters will be playing a vital role in supporting Colchester’s rich heritage, a legacy to last a lifetime.

For those looking for a unique gift with a low environmental impact, head to the website and marvel at the wonders of the Museum's collections and choose a gift for that special person that’s as unique and meaningful as them.”
