Leisure World Colchester’s FREE programme of fun, relaxed activities and sports for people living with dementia and their carers has been extended until April 2019.

Since it launched in February, over 400 people have attended the dementia sessions running every Wednesday during school term-time. Participants enjoy activities they love or try something new, all in a safe and supportive environment.

Wednesdays start off with badminton and table tennis sessions from 1-3pm, with swimming also available, under the guidance of qualified teachers in a dedicated lane, in the Fitness Pool from 2.30-3.30pm.

Then on selected Wednesdays, find a partner and swing into step with Afternoon Tea Dances on 16 & 30 January, 6 February, 6 & 20 March and 3 April and enjoy Songs and Memories on 9 & 23 January, 13 & 27 February and 13 & 27 March.

Cllr Mark Cory, Leader Colchester Borough Council, said: “As a Dementia Friendly organisation, we believe that a huge difference can be made to the lives of all those living with dementia if people around them understand the difficulties that they face. I’m really pleased that we have been able to extend these free sessions at Leisure World enable people to enjoy activities, as part of our normal public sessions, in surroundings where they feel supported and safe.”

Community360 can provide transport to Leisure World for these activities by accessing bursary funding dedicated to participants in the sessions. Please call 01206 216600 for more information and to book.

All Dementia Friendly sessions are FREE until 4 April 2019. After this date, activities will be chargeable. There is no need to book, just turn up and take part. For more information, please call 01206 282000 or visit colchesterleisureworld.co.uk/dementia-friendly-activities
