Colchester’s Visitor Information Centre (VIC) will re-open on Monday 12 April under Step Two of the Government’s roadmap out of Covid restrictions, when non-essential retail, outdoor hospitality, overnight stays in some camping and self-catering accommodation and outdoor attractions like zoos will also open to the public once again.
Although the physical Visitor Information Centre has been shut for the past few months, the team has continued to keep in regular contact with potential visitors, tourism businesses and locals providing information and updates via the Visit Colchester social media channels and website: www.visitcolchester.com.
When the VIC reopens, it will continue to support the phased opening of the local visitor economy, reassuring the public that Colchester’s attractions, places to eat and shopping outlets are all fully compliant with Government guidance and ready to successfully welcome back visitors when allowed.
As the building is a small space, the number of people admitted to the VIC will be kept to a maximum of four at a time, from an established bubble or household. Staff will be on hand to guide people and direct them where to wait safely, if necessary. Signage will also be on display to help guide visitors, and hand sanitiser stations will also be available.
The gift shop will also be open for people wishing to purchase locally made gifts and Colchester souvenirs. Contactless payments will be encouraged wherever possible and screens have been installed around the till area. Apart from these small changes everything else will remain as usual, and most importantly, the warm and welcoming team will be waiting to help with enquiries.
Colchester has a vibrant culture and unique history which makes it a fantastic place to live and visit. The knowledgeable team at the VIC are hugely passionate about the borough and ready to provide all the help visitors need as domestic travel resumes, as well as continuing to provide services to residents looking for information on what to do in their local area.
Please note, at this time Hollytrees Museum will continue to remain closed to the public.
Work is ongoing to restart socially distanced guided tours of the town and more information on this will follow.
