New platform, better experience: Colchester City Council’s move to LocalGov Drupal

PUBLISHED: 18 November 2025

We’re packing up our digital boxes and getting ready to move! Soon we’ll launch the first phase of our new website - built on the LocalGov Drupal platform, a modern, accessible, and user-focused solution designed specifically for local government.

This move isn’t just about changing platforms. It’s about creating a better online experience for our residents - one that’s faster, clearer, and easier to use.

Why We’re Moving
Our current website has served us well, but it’s time for an upgrade. We want a site that:
  • Meets accessibility standards so everyone can use it with ease.
  • Delivers consistent design and navigation across all pages.
  • Helps people find what they need quickly, without frustration.
  • Aligns with Local Government Digital Service Standards.

LocalGov Drupal gives us all that - and more. It’s a platform built collaboratively by councils across the UK, meaning we benefit from shared knowledge, best practices, and ongoing improvements.

What’s Coming
The first phase of the rollout includes:

  • A completely redesigned homepage built around how people actually use the site for a more intuitive experience.
  • A brand-new Planning section, rebuilt from scratch with clearer layouts and improved navigation to help you quickly find the information you need.
  • An updated News section, keeping you informed with the latest updates from across the council.

This is just the beginning. Over the coming months, we’ll continue migrating more content and services to the new platform.

Built with You, Not Just for You
We’ve collaborated closely with our Residents Panel throughout this journey. Their insights have influenced everything from the site’s layout to the language used, helping ensure it meets real user needs - not just technical specifications. And we’re not stopping there. We’d love to hear what residents think about this first phase of changes, so we can continue shaping the future of the website together.

This collaborative approach means the new site isn’t just more functional - it’s more human.

What You’ll Notice
Once the first phase goes live, you’ll find:
  • Cleaner design that’s easier to read and navigate.
  • Improved structure, so you spend less time hunting for information.
  • Mobile-friendly pages, making it easier to access services on the go.
  • Faster performance, so you can get things done without delays.

These improvements will make the new site much quicker and simpler to navigate.

What’s Next?
We’ll continue to improve and expand the site in future phases, always guided by feedback from residents and staff. This is part of our commitment to continuous improvement and putting people first in everything we do.

We’re excited about this move - and we hope you are too.
