The launch of the LTA Barclays Big Tennis Weekend at Leisure World Colchester on 1 November was a huge success, officially kicking off the new series of free weekend tennis sessions.
The first event saw a brilliant turnout, with over 40 residents of all ages getting involved and enjoying a fantastic one-hour free tennis session. The atmosphere was energetic and welcoming, proving that tennis truly is a sport for everyone.
The national campaign is now running every Saturday morning, from 10am to 11am at the Leisure World Tennis Centre, Eudo Road. These tennis sessions are designed for all ages and abilities (Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult). No previous experience is required, and all equipment will be provided. Sessions are run by volunteer Park Tennis Activators who lead fun tennis activities.
David Simmons, Founder of Simmply Active said: “What an amazing start to the Big Tennis Weekend! Seeing so many people of all ages picking up a racket, laughing, and giving tennis a go was brilliant. That buzz on court is exactly what we love – making sport social, fun, and for everyone. We can’t wait to keep the rallies going and see even more new faces join in!”
Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure said: “The successful kick-off proves there is a real appetite for accessible, healthy activities in Colchester. We are proud to work with LTA Barclays to offer these free tennis sessions, and I encourage every resident to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to get active.”
