New cycle map and website upgrade make cycling easier in Colchester

Colchester City Council has launched a new cycling map and upgraded the Cycle Colchester website to make cycling in the city easier, safer, and more accessible.

The updated map, available both in print and online, highlights on and off-road cycle routes, bike parking locations and key connections across Colchester. Whether for commuting, leisure or family cycling, the map has been designed to give cyclists the confidence and knowledge to make cycling a practical and enjoyable part of everyday life.

Neil Allen, a Colchester resident, said: “It’s a valuable resource for local riders – I’ve had positive responses from all the people I’ve given them to. They appreciated a printed map for its ease of use and the range of information on it.”

William Bramhill, Vice-Secretary of Colchester Cycling Campaign, said: “Cycle Colchester deserves praise for this map. It’s exceptionally clear and conveniently sized to fit into a bag or pocket. People often overlook that the city is continually evolving, with new residents arriving who rely on resources like this to navigate. I’m eager to have a few copies to distribute.”

The launch of the new map comes alongside a significant redevelopment of the Cycle Colchester website, which has been upgraded in 2024 with funding from DEFRA. The website, originally established as part of the Cycle Town Project between 2008 and 2011, has been refreshed to provide a modern hub for cycling information, events, advice and community connections. From route planning and bike maintenance tips to introductions to local cycling groups, the improved platform offers a one-stop resource to support anyone looking to cycle more often in Colchester.

Cllr Luxford Vaughan, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Sustainable Development at Colchester City Council, said: “We are delighted to launch the new Colchester cycle map alongside the upgraded Cycle Colchester website. Together, these resources make it simpler, safer and more enjoyable to choose cycling for everyday journeys as well as leisure. Supporting more people to cycle contributes to cleaner air, healthier lifestyles and a more connected city, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of the new map and online resources to discover just how easy and rewarding cycling in Colchester can be.”

Printed copies of the cycle map can be picked up from bike shops, the Town Hall, Visitor Information Centre, Leisure World and other venues across Colchester including community centres and cafes, while a digital version is available at cyclecolchester.co.uk.
