Cllr Alison Jay and Cllr Jocelyn Law, recently visited The Gilberd School for a dynamic “Councillor Question Time” session – part of an ongoing initiative to build stronger links between the council and young residents.
The session, designed to support the school’s lessons on national and local government, began with a tour of the school, followed by a short presentation developed with the council’s Democratic Services team. Students then led a wide-ranging Q&A session, asking thoughtful questions on the role of councillors, the impact of local elections, community engagement opportunities, environmental initiatives, funding for school projects, and regeneration plans in the city.
Councillors responded with openness and enthusiasm, offering real-world context to civic topics and acknowledging the value of youth-led projects in strengthening community cohesion.
Cllr Jocelyn Law, Colchester City Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Public Protection, praised the students for their thoughtful approach: “This is exactly the kind of engagement we need to see more of. The students clearly care about their city and want to contribute in meaningful ways. Their questions were smart, challenging, and showed genuine interest in how local democracy works.”
Student Finn Bates, Senior Ambassador Personal Development, said: “It was a brilliant opportunity to gain an insight into how local councillors work and manage projects for the local community, like the Northern Gateway. It was a really enjoyable and eye-opening meeting.”
Student Ava Turver, Senior Ambassador Teaching and Learning, added: “It was a pleasure meeting with Councillor Law and Councillor Jay. It was interesting to understand about the structure and function of local democracy and the dedication it takes to be a councillor.”
The visit builds on a growing partnership between The Gilberd School and the council, including last year’s successful mural project at the local community centre. Following this latest visit, discussions are underway to expand the Q&A format to include more students and schools across Colchester.
Further collaboration is already in motion, with new community initiatives and opportunities for students to take a leading role in shaping their city.
