Colchester City Council is continuing to support a growing number of residents struggling with the cost of living crisis, helping many hundreds in recent months, handling thousands of calls and emails for Benefits Advice alone.
The council has provided over £1.3m in benefits and other financial support, including over £300,000 to nearly 600 residents in Discretionary Housing Payments to help with unaffordable rents and to avoid families becoming homeless. It has also provided exceptional Hardship Payments to 126 residents to help with essentials such as food and fuel.
The council's team of specialist advisors has also helped nearly 500 residents with complex employment cases in the past year.
Cllr David King, Leader of Colchester City Council, said: “The increased cost of living is continuing to affect everyone. We know that many people are struggling to make ends meet, and we are here to help as much as we can.
“We have put together a range of support that can make a real difference, including financial assistance, debt advice, and help with energy bills. We have also partnered with local charities to provide food banks and other essential services.
“I would encourage everyone to reach out for help if they are struggling. You are not alone. Hundreds of people have already been helped, and we are committed to doing everything we can to support our residents through this difficult time.”
The council continues to run a series of events providing advice and support to residents at various locations throughout the city, including Jobcentre Plus, Foodbank, Colchester360, Reed in Partnership, Youth Enquiry Service, C3 Impact Hub, as well as pop-up stands at Asda Turner Rise and Colchester Market.
