Architect chosen for the Heart of Greenstead project

PUBLISHED: 3 July 2023

The first phase of the Heart of Greenstead regeneration project has taken a step closer, with KLH Architects being chosen to design a new multiuse community hub.

Following work with the local community and partners (including Essex County Council, the NHS and Community360), the planning stage is moving forward. With the architect on board, work can start on designing the detail.

This appointment marks another significant step forward for the £18.2 million Town Deal Funding from Government that Colchester was awarded in 2022.

Cllr Natalie Sommers, Colchester City Council Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: “I am pleased that this exciting and much needed project in Colchester, backed by the £18.2 million investment from the Government’s Town Deal Fund, has moved a step closer today.

“Through working hand-in-hand with the Greenstead community, we will ensure that we make improvements to this area of Colchester, making it a great place to live and work for many years to come.”

The project will focus on redeveloping the area known as ‘The Centre’ where the Community Centre, Library and Co-op are. Phase 1 will create a new multiuse community hub which we hope to complete by March 2026. Further phases of the scheme will also bring:

  • safer, more accessible spaces for community use
  • up to 139 new or refurbished high-quality affordable homes
  • improved walking and cycling routes to the city centre
  • provide 700 free bicycles to those that live in Greenstead

The result will transform the heart of the Greenstead community, open up new opportunities, create employment, better housing, improved access to healthcare and connectivity to the city centre – overall a better place to live and work.

With an impressive portfolio of successful projects and a commitment to innovative design, KLH Architects brings extensive expertise and a passion for community-driven architecture to this significant regeneration project.

Engagement events are set to take place over the summer where Greenstead residents and the wider public are encouraged to share thoughts on the development plans and have the opportunity to feedback.

There is an open drop-in session every Monday at Greenstead Community Centre, run by a Community360 Engagement Officer, where residents can pop in for a chat about the project.

For those that would like to get more involved, join the 'Greenstead Community Taskforce'. The group meet monthly, and their feedback helps to shape all areas of the project including the design of the integrated Health and Community Hub.
