Take part in Trinity Square consultation

PUBLISHED: 16 May 2023

The community is invited to share their thoughts on a transformative project that will turn the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church into a beautiful and accessible area for everyone to enjoy, as part of Colchester’s £19.2 million Town Deal Funding.

On Saturday, 20 May a consultation event will be held outside the church, where the new designs for the churchyard will be showcased and a team available to answer any questions you may have. These designs will also be available for viewing and commenting online at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/trinitysquareproject.

To preserve the area's historical significance, the designs have been developed by award-winning Colchester-based architects HAT Projects in consultation with Historic England and take a sensitive approach to creating greater access to the churchyard.

Currently, the historic churchyard of Holy Trinity Church is not open to the public, but the vision is to transform it into a green oasis in the city centre – a space where people can enjoy the shade of trees and the tranquillity of the churchyard during the day.

Lindsay Barker, Executive Director of Place at Colchester City Council, said: “Improving our public spaces is at the heart of the Town Deal projects. We are committed to creating a space that is not only beautiful but also functional and sustainable. With your support, we can transform this neglected space into a vibrant and accessible green space that the community can be proud of.

“This is your chance to determine the future of this unique and historic area and help create a legacy for future generations to enjoy.”

Simon Blaxill, We are Colchester Board Chair, said: “I would encourage people to visit Trinity Square and take part in the HAT consultation, to find out more about the proposed designs and to give their views on them. The Town Deal funded project in Trinity Square will make this a wonderful, calm and inviting space in the heart of the city centre.”

Following the consultation, a planning application will be submitted to bring the project to life.

Holy Trinity Square is a key part of Colchester’s Town Deal Funding, which aims to refresh neglected and forgotten areas of the City Centre, creating new public spaces that allow people to enjoy a tranquil natural space in the middle of the city.
