May 2023 marks the Coronation of a new Monarch, His Majesty King Charles III. It will be celebrated across the country and The Commonwealth and marked with a three-day bank holiday weekend from Saturday 6 May to Monday 8 May 2023.

Colchester City Council is encouraging people from across the city to get involved in organising and attending events and activities to celebrate this momentous occasion. Also, as encouraged by the King, to consider where they can help others by volunteering. Whether through ‘The Big Help Out’ or many local voluntary organisations, such as Community360.

Colchester has long had links to royalty, from being granted the first Royal Charter in 1189 through to its current status as a saluting station, with Colchester Garrison’s artillery firing to mark significant royal occasions. Just last month, The King and The Queen Consort visited to mark Colchester becoming a modern city, as part of our Year of Celebration.

Cllr David King, Leader of Colchester City Council, said: “It will be great to see communities from across the City of Colchester come together to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III in May. This is a momentous event in our history. A great opportunity for everyone to have time together, with friends, family and our neighbours. To get together and celebrate to mark an important national moment, and to look beyond the coronation to how we might as volunteers, help others.”

To mark the start of the Coronation celebrations in Colchester, bunting has recently been installed in the High Street.

Here are activities happening across the bank holiday weekend:

Saturday 6 May
  • 10am-4pm: Colchester’s Coronation Picnic in the Park in Upper Castle Park
  • 11.30am: Coronation 21-gun salute in Castle Park, to be fired at approximately noon as the King is crowned
  • 10am-5pm: Giant Union Jack deck chairs in Culver Square

Sunday 7 May
  • 11am-3pm: Fun Day at Mercury Theatre, Colchester
  • Colchester Castle, Colchester Town Hall, Mercury Theatre and Jumbo lit up in a mix of red, white and blue

To celebrate volunteering, Community360 will be asking residents to make a volunteering pledge at its HUB in the city centre from 20 April. It aims to celebrate what volunteering is already happening to make a difference within our local communities, but also to encourage people and organisations to ‘do what you can’ and commit to doing a little bit more. More information will be available on Community360’s website later this month.

Don’t miss the Coronation Street Tag Trail! Discover 15 locations across the city, each with a link to royalty past and present.
