Children’s cycling lessons at Colchester Sports Park

Youngsters will soon be able to enjoy a safe space to master their cycling skills with the help of a qualified coach when the new Go-Ride programme launches at the Colchester Sports Park in Spring 2022. 
 
Go-Ride – a national British Cycling scheme for clubs and young peoplewill use the Sports Park facilities including the specially painted Learn to Ride area, a safe space for beginners to practice riding their bikes.
 
Go-Ride provides regular expert coaching sessions, in a traffic-free environment, designed to encourage a lifelong love of cycling and create opportunities for progression into the world of competitive cycling. 
 
British Cycling is currently looking to recruit a full-time Go-Ride coach, in partnership with Colchester Borough Council, to deliver the new programme to youngsters in the community, schools and clubs, to help find the next Sir Chris Hoy, Laura Kenny or Dame Sarah Storey. British Cycling is one of the world’s most successful sports governing bodies, with more than 130,000 members. From winning Olympic and Paralympic gold medals to inspiring almost two million people to ride their bikes regularly, the organisation is committed to making cycling the number one sport and activity of choice in Britain.

The £28.8m Colchester Sports Park, which opened last April and is located off junction 28 of the A12, boasts several state-of-the-art facilities for cyclists, including a one-mile floodlit track and a cycle pump track for children. Other amenities at the 76-acre sport and leisure facility include 3G pitches, rugby pitches, a multi-use sports centre, fitness suite, exercise studios, an interactive velo studio, indoor cricket, badminton, futsal and archery.
 
Cllr Sue Lissimore, Portfolio Holder for Resources and Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “I am delighted that we are able to support this exciting new programme, which will hopefully encourage more young people to learn to ride their bikes safely and take up cycling for the benefit of their physical, mental and social health – and perhaps even help forge a career in competitive cycling. 

“Go-Ride is such a positive way to promote cycling to a new generation and a fabulous opportunity for a skilled coach to become an integral part of our Colchester Sports Park community.”
