This summer discover more about Colchester’s Roman ancestors with a fun trivia trail suitable for the whole family!
The new trail gives the young (and not so young!) history buffs in the family the chance to explore Colchester's rich Roman heritage by completing a walking trail around some of Colchester's key historic sites.
At each location you’ll find out a fascinating fact based on Colchester’s Roman past and at the end our younger guests can challenge themselves to draw their own picture of Roman Colchester or simply let us know a fascinating fact they have learned on the trail in return for a small prize!
The trail takes in Colchester’s iconic sites throughout the town centre such as Colchester Castle, The Roman Circus Centre and Balkerne Gate, but also includes some that are not as well known, perfect for learning more about Colchester’s historic past and discovering some surprising facts!
Visitors can download a copy of the trail from the Visit Colchester website here www.visitcolchester.com/romantriviatrail or pop into the Visitor Information Centre based at Hollytrees Museum in Castle Park to pick up a printed version, and of course collect your prize!

Councillor Darius Laws, Portfolio Holder for Economy, Business and Heritage for Colchester Borough Council said: “This new trail is a great way for families to get together, get some fresh air and exercise and discover more about their hometown’s heritage or the town they are visiting.
“You can discover how the Romans lived, what they did for entertainment and even why elephants play a significant role in Colchester’s history!”
