This September, Colchester Borough Council supported the Great British September Clean, which ran from 11-27 September.The Great British September Clean was organised nationally by Keep Britain Tidy, after the annual Great British Spring Clean was postponed due to Covid-19.
Residents were asked to show support, either by organising a private group clean up with up to five family and friends or by pledging to do their own clean up.
Volunteers were asked to separate the litter they picked into three bags: one for plastic bottles; one for aluminium cans, and a third for the rest of the rubbish.
Throughout Colchester, 23 litter picks were organised. Colchester Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Services team have now collected 174 bags of general waste and a further 28 bags of recyclable material, as a result of the litter picks.
Cllr Mike Lilley, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Communities, Wellbeing and Public Safety, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who took part in this great initiative. That’s 174 bags of rubbish off the streets and parks of our beautiful borough, and lots of material that we can now get recycled”.
Cllr Martin Goss, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Waste, Environment and Transportation, added: “A huge thank you to everyone who took the time and care for our borough to participate in this. It is thanks to people like them that we can all work together to keep our borough free from litter. I hope they set a fine example for how we should all take responsibility in caring for a Better Colchester”.
