Colchester Castle and Black History Month Colchester are proud to be displaying a series of information panels explaining the history and narrative surrounding the Windrush generation. The seven temporary screens will be available for visitors to view from today (9 October 2020) until the end of the month, as part of its commitment to Black History Month.The panels will investigate the life of, and ultimate discrimination against, those who travelled to the UK from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971. MV Empire Windrush was just one ship that transported almost 500 passengers to the UK – all with the aim of solving post-war worker shortages. In total, it is estimated that around half-a-million passengers – men, women and children – came to the UK during this period. This temporary mini display tells the story of these individuals and what has become known as the Windrush generation.

Councillor Julie Young, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Performance and Deputy Leader of the Council said: “This is an important story that forms part of our country’s history and I am delighted that the Castle is playing its part in sharing that story. The information panels are hugely insightful and well worth taking the time to see on a visit to the Castle.”
