From 21-27 September, Colchester Borough Council is taking part in Recycle Week 2020, a national campaign committed to encouraging, inspiring and supporting people to recycle more at home.

This year’s theme ‘Together – We Recycle’ sees the council saying thank you to its residents for continuing to recycle, despite the challenges that Covid-19 has presented them. It will also be celebrating the waste reduction efforts of Colchester’s community organisations, who raise awareness of how best to reuse, repair or recycle unwanted household items and thanking its recycling crews, who are key worker staff.

Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Environment and Transportation, said: “This Recycle Week, we’re keen to celebrate those in our communities who are continuing to work hard to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, despite all the complications coronavirus has presented them.

“It’s a big community effort and includes en-form with its Local Recycling Directory and collection points for items that aren’t recyclable at the kerbside, the Repair, Reuse, Recycle and Refill Café in Wivenhoe, Re-Cycle,  Bike Kitchen, Clothing Clinic and many more.

“I also want to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to residents in Colchester for their hard work to recycle, and extend my appreciation to each and every member of staff in our Neighbourhood Services team who have ensured that our rubbish and recycling and other front lines services have been maintained throughout these difficult times.

“By all working together, we’re reducing waste that goes to landfill, reducing costs to the taxpayer and doing our bit for the environment and supports our goal of being a greener and cleaner borough.”

To help raise awareness of this fantastic work, Colchester Castle and Colchester Town Hall will be lit up green every evening this week (starting tonight, Monday 21 September 2020). The Council will also be sharing tips and links to community organisations on its social media pages @EnjoyColchester on Facebook and @YourColchester on Twitter , throughout Recycle Week 2020.

Now in its 17th year, Recycle Week is a celebration of recycling, organised by WRAP under the Recycle Now brand. The aim of the week is to encourage the public to recycle more, by demonstrating the benefits of recycling items from all around the home.
