Colchester Borough Council’s ambition to provide more high-quality homes for both private sale and affordable rent has taken a major step forward, as construction gets underway to build new family houses and apartments in Lexden, Colchester.Colchester Amphora Homes Ltd (CAHL), the council’s commercial housing company, today (20 August) announced its appointment of Tiptree-based building contractors, TJ Evers, to undertake the renovation and conversion of an extensive Victorian villa at 60 Creffield Road.
The development, within a highly sought-after residential area of Colchester, will see the sympathetic conversion of a listed villa into six apartments, alongside construction of two three-storey townhouses within the property’s grounds. Two of the six apartments will remain in Council ownership to support local housing need.
Cllr Nick Barlow, Chair of Colchester Commercial Holdings’ Board, said: “A warm welcome to TJ Evers. It’s exciting to see the start of construction work to build these impressive new homes within this highly desirable part of Colchester. I’m particularly pleased to see a local contractor appointed, supporting the Council’s ambition to ensure the borough’s business sector is best placed for recovery.”
The project falls within Amphora Homes’ first phase of development to deliver 350 new homes across the borough by 2024. It will be the first of Amphora Homes’ developments to reach market with an anticipated date of Spring 2021. All profits will be returned to Colchester Borough Council for reinvestment into its core services.

Designed by award-winning architects Barefoot & Gilles, the homes will offer flexible living, with open plan kitchen and dining/breakfast rooms, master bedrooms with en-suite, allocated off-street parking and landscaped gardens. Construction is being project managed on site by Apex Project Management.
Start of works follows a thorough archaeological investigation undertaken by CAT, in June 2020. Its explorations revealed a well-preserved section of a two-mile Roman road that connected the city of Camulodunum to the prestigious temple complex at Gosbecks.
