Colchester Events & Pop Up Pictures have joined forces to bring the ultimate Outdoor Movie experience to Colchester, this summer.

The first Colchester Film & Food Festival will take place from Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th August, across two locations in Colchester Castle Park. Over four days, movie-goers can relax in the great outdoors while watching their favourite movies – from Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody to Nightmare on Elm Street and Shaun of the Dead.

There’s plenty for families, too, with moneysaving offers on a host of films for kids of all ages – from Dora the Explorer and Lion King to Frozen II and Toy Story 4 – plus children up to 15 years-old go free with every paying adult.

A special treat for music-lovers on Sunday 8 August brings Yesterday, Danny Boyle’s romantic comedy inspired by the music of The Beatles, and Rocketman, the biographical musical based on the life of Elton John. Audiences can watch both films for the price of one.

Eating Street, a pop-up street food market in Castle Park, will be open to the public throughout the festival long weekend, including for non-movie-goers visiting the town, with an array of flavours from the local street food traders.

Colchester Events Company has hosted summer screenings every year since 2014, while Pop Up Pictures has hosted events in the borough for the past three years. With the challenges of Covid-19, event organisers took the decision to work in partnership to better ensure a safe and viable event, with social distancing and hand sanitiser stations among the measures in place.

Cllr Theresa Higgins, Portfolio Holder for Commercial Services, said: “This exciting four-day festival of film and food has something to appeal to all audiences and is a wonderful way to socialise safely in the great outdoors with friends and family groups.

“It’s also heartening to see businesses within the events and hospitality sectors working together to begin responsibly trading once again.”
