Colchester Museums opens search for Board of Trustees

Colchester Museums has today (30 April 2020) opened the search for the first board of Trustees for its new foundation, The Colchester Museums Development Foundation.

We are looking for enthusiastic advocates for the Museum Service, which is made up of the iconic Colchester Castle, Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum, based in Colchester, Essex.

As custodians of these iconic buildings, the team in Colchester protect and preserve precious collections, including nationally and internationally important artefacts.

Museums are changing and this new charitable foundation will bring many exciting opportunities to help shape the future of the museums and preserve them for future generations.

We would like expressions of interest from people with a diverse range of personal and professional backgrounds, who will bring with them creative ideas, skills and experience. A background in the Arts, Education, Fundraising, Community Engagement, Marketing or Finance being core skills that will be considered.

As we serve the people of Colchester, it is important and appropriate that our own decision-making is informed by members of our local community and this is equally valued alongside individuals with relevant expertise.

Successful Trustees will be expected to be hands-on, introduce potential new partners through previous contacts, acquaintances and friends, and play an active role in the running of the Foundation.

In return, the role will be fulfilling and diverse. Sitting at the heart of the local community, the Foundation will strengthen the strong community links it already has and work with the community to ensure Colchester’s heritage is preserved for future generations to enjoy. Above all, Trustees will have the desire and vision to make real positive differences.

The Foundation will be run independently from council funding and will be entirely supplementary, allowing the Museums Service to reach new audiences.

Councillor Julie Young, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Performance and Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “If you are passionate about Colchester, its heritage and helping to preserve our history for future generations, we would like to hear from you.
