Bring the great outdoors to your indoors!

With everyone’s access to the great outdoors currently curtailed, Colchester Borough Council’s friendly Parks team is determined to bring a smile to residents’ faces through its new #ParksAtHome initiative.

The team, who are usually busy running activities for everyone across the borough, have decided to bring the great Colchester outdoors to you! Each week, the team will be sharing some fun activities that can be tried at home or while out taking daily exercise with your household. These are mainly aimed at children, but anyone can give them a go!

Some of the activities will touch lightly on core curriculum subjects – making learning fun and providing support to parents with some new home-school activities.

The first activities include designing a photo map and looking at shapes in new ways!

Make sure you are following our social media channels and regularly checking our website so you don’t miss out on any new weekly activities at www.colchester.gov.uk/coronavirus

Cllr Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Environment and Transportation, said: “This is undoubtedly a difficult time for everyone. Routines have changed, and children are having to adjust to home schooling. Our Parks at Home initiative is intended to bring some fun, joy and creativity into the week.

“All of the activities can be done from home, regardless of access to a garden or outdoor space, or completed while going outside for our permitted one walk a day. The Parks team would love to see what you’ve achieved, so please share your efforts with us on social media using the #ParksAtHome.”

Colchester Borough Council’s parks and country sites remain open to the public. However, we would urge the public to abide by the Government’s guidelines of social distancing when exercising. It is recommended that people remain two metres apart from others. Gatherings of more than two people will be asked to disperse. The Parks team would like to stress how important this is, so that everyone can enjoy our open spaces and help combat the spread of the coronavirus.
