Leisure World Colchester has received £1,970 from Active Colchester to support dementia programs, allowing it to provide fun, relaxing dementia activities at a reduced price for those living with dementia. The funding will also allow carers to participate for free.

Sessions will include badminton, table tennis, swimming sessions, dance classes and afternoon tea.

Cllr Theresa Higgins, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Commercial Services, said: “As a Dementia Friendly organisation, we believe that a huge difference can be made to the lives of all those living with dementia if people around them understand the difficulties they face. Dementia doesn’t have to be the end of doing something you love, and I’m really pleased that we have been able to receive funding to offer activities at a reduced rate.”

Rory Doyle, Chair of Active Colchester, added: “The benefits of physical activity for people living with dementia are well known. However, we know that individuals and families face many barriers and participation in or sustaining activity can be difficult. Active Colchester is therefore very pleased to be working in partnership with Leisure World Colchester to deliver accessible activities for those living with dementia and their families.”

Community360 can provide transport to Leisure World for these activities by accessing bursary funding dedicated to participants in the sessions. Please call 01206 216600 for more information and to book.

All Dementia Friendly sessions will be reduced until the end of 2019. There is no need to book, just turn up and take part. For more information, please call 01206 282000 or visit colchesterleisureworld.co.uk/dementia-friendly-activities.
