Cemetery temporary toilet closure

The toilet will close for a deep clean and repairs but should reopen within a few days

Date issued: 24 September 2019

The toilet near the entrance of Colchester Cemetery, off Mersea Road, has been closed temporarily following vandalism and anti-social behaviour including drug misuse and rough sleeping.

The toilet, which is managed by Colchester Borough Council, will be closed whilst a deep clean and repairs can be made but should reopen within a few days.

Alternative toilets are available at the crematorium (ladies, gents and disabled access), which are open on weekdays from 9am to 5pm and at weekends and Bank Holidays from 10am to 1pm, and at the Starlight Tea Room (for customers of the tea room only).

Cllr Gerard Oxford, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Customer, said: “It’s really unfortunate that visitors to the cemetery are unable to temporarily use the toilet near Mersea Road because of the inconsiderate actions of a small number of people.

“I feel it’s important that we provide a place for visitors to the cemetery to go to the loo, but this toilet has seen several instances of anti-social behaviour over the last few years. We are looking into a long-term solution that will enable the toilet to remain accessible for those that use the cemetery on a regular basis, which may include a key activation entry system.”
