Recycling Week in Colchester

Colchester Borough Council will be celebrating national Recycling Week next week, by hosting free drop-in events for residents to come and talk to them about recycling at home and pick up hints and tips to recycle even more.

Recycling Week events will be taking place:

  • Monday 23 September, 10am –12pm and 1-3pm – Colchester Town Library
  • Tuesday 24 September, 10-11.30am - Boxted Community Centre

At these events, staff will also be on hand to give out new/replacement green boxes to residents who need them and have a voucher. The council’s Digital Access Support Team will also be at the events and happy to help anyone needing support to download a recycling container voucher.

WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), the charity that co-ordinates this national event, have announced this year’s theme as ‘Recycling – It’s in our own hands’. This year’s events and messaging aims to provide residents with information about not only how they can recycle more through their kerbside collections but also how other items can be recycled elsewhere locally.

The council will also be reminding residents that they can have two green recycling boxes for recycling glass and cans on a Blue Week, allowing them to place all their cans in one box and glass in the other. By having two boxes, they will be lighter to put out for collection, increase the amount residents can put out for recycling and stack away tidily too. To get a free new or replacement green box, residents can download a voucher and take it to a local stockist.

Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Environment and Transportation, said: “Colchester’s residents are fantastic at recycling and I’d like to acknowledge and thank everyone, including staff, for all their hard work to increase recycling in the borough and reduce the amount of rubbish that’s sent to landfill.

“Last year, Colchester’s recycling rate was 54% and since April this year we have recycled 56.3% of our waste, which is really great news.

“Our Recycling Week events are a great way for residents to get advice and information about how they can recycle even more and help the environment further.”
