Waste collections reduced in extreme heat

Due to the continuing severe high temperatures Colchester Borough Council’s waste and recycling collections have been affected today and will operate a reduced service tomorrow (Thursday 25 July).

With temperatures reaching 33 degrees today and the Met Office expecting the July record of 36.7C to be broken tomorrow, the Council has taken this decision for the safety of its collection crews.

Tomorrow, the Council will only collect black bags/bins and food waste in the areas that were missed today and where there is a collection due.

Residents whose plastic, paper and card, textiles, cans and glass recycling and garden waste was not collected today and won’t be tomorrow, are asked to take these back in and put them out for collection on their next relevant Blue/Green Week in two weeks time.

Collection of waste and recycling from flats, special collections, and trade waste collections, are unaffected.

Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Environment and Transportation, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but the safety of our staff is extremely important to us and we trust you will understand why these decisions have been taken.”
