Visitors to Victoria Esplanade, West Mersea, will be able to enjoy their visit even more following the opening of refurbished public toilets.
The £32,000 project to upgrade the toilets was supported by a £15,000 grant from Colchester Borough Council and funded by a combination of other sources including through West Mersea Town Council.
The refurbishment, which took five weeks to complete, included:
- new hand-washing facilities
- baby change facilities in both the ladies and the gentlemen’s toilets
- new efficient LED lighting and a waterless urinal to conserve water and reduce running costs
- easily-cleaned wall panelling
- updated facilities in both disabled toilets
- new windows fitted, new signage installed and the exterior repaired and repainted.
Overall, the project took 18-months to come together, with the works being carried out over five weeks before Easter.
An official opening ceremony was held last week – attended by Colchester Borough Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Julie Young and Cllr David King, Portfolio Holder for Business and Resources, accompanied by West Mersea’s Mayor, Cllr Carl Powling.
Cllr Young said: “It is really pleasing that we have been able to help bring a project like this to completion. It has been really well received and will benefit residents and visitors alike. It fits in with our ambition to create a Better Colchester.”
West Mersea’s Mayor, Cllr Carl Powling, said: “We are delighted to have received financial support from the CBC to enable West Mersea Town Council to undertake this vital refurbishment which will benefit residents and our many tourists who flock to our wonderful island.”
