Colchester Borough Council has opened a public consultation concerning the use of St Botolph’s Priory and its grounds.
St Botolph’s Priory is a key heritage attraction for Colchester and attracts thousands of visitors from across the world each year. Today only the impressive ruins of the nave remain, but there are key interpretation panels across the site of the first English Augustinian priory church, which dates to the eleventh century, to aid visitors.
Alongside the ruins lays a large open space which is available for residents and visitors to enjoy. By taking part in a short consultation, Colchester residents will be able to have their say about how they feel the site can be used more – including using the space for community events and even lighting the Priory itself. The consultation form will take no more than five minutes to complete.
Councillor Michael Lilley, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Wellbeing and Public Safety said: “This is a tremendous opportunity for residents to have their say on how this important heritage site in Colchester is used in the future. It would be fantastic to see bustling community events taking place in the space and breathing life once again into this important landmark in Colchester’s history.
“If you have any ideas on how this space could be used please take five minutes to let us know. We are looking forward to hearing everyone’s views.”
Councillor Julie Young, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Performance and Deputy Leader of the Council, added: “Consultations such as these are important for us to be able to take steps to continue to promote our key heritage attractions and preserve them for generations to come. I invite you to have your say and help us keep this landmark alive for future generations.”
