The Sport For Confidence programme at Leisure World Colchester is expanding to include swimming as part of its main programme of activities.

The pioneering Sport for Confidence programme places specialist health professionals alongside sports coaches to deliver a wide range of sports and physical activities for those who face barriers to participation.

Since its launch in January 2019, over 80 people have attended Sport for Confidence sessions on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Participants enjoy activities they love or try something new – all in a safe and supportive environment.

Monday: Boccia, 1.30-2.30pm

Wednesday: Multisports, 12.30-1.30pm; Indoor Football, 2.30-3.30pm; Seated Exercise 11am-12pm

Monday: Swimming, 12-1pm

Tom Doughty, Head Coach at Sport For Confidence, said: “Swimming is a great activity which can deliver significant mental and physical benefits. For some, the feeling of being in the water provides a calming and soothing effect it is difficult to mirror elsewhere. These sessions, run by an allied health professional and swim coach, recognise that those attending will appreciate a quiet, controlled environment and may need a little extra support and encouragement during their visit.”

Cllr Theresa Higgins, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Commercial Services, said: “The Sport For Confidence programme has gone from strength to strength, since its launch in January 2019. I’m pleased to see the programme develop to include swimming sessions. This builds on the great work that is already happening in Colchester to engage individuals most in need and who will really prosper from the many social, mental and physical benefits sport and physical activity delivers.”
