£207,000 awarded to community groups

Ten community organisations have been successful with their applications to receive a share of Colchester Borough Council’s £207,000 Voluntary Welfare Grant for 2019/20.

Registered charities, constituted voluntary and community organisations, and not-for-profit organisations across the borough were eligible to apply for a share of the grant.

Organisations submitted their applications via a competitive process last autumn and could apply for a one-off grant of between £5,000 and £50,000. Applicants had to demonstrate that they would either increase volunteering, help people build skills for life or work, prevent loneliness, support people to take action in their communities, or help vulnerable people to improve their lives.

Over £810,000 worth of requests were made to the fund. At a funding panel meeting in January, it was agreed that the 2019/20 fund would be split between a variety of organisations. This includes Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse Essex (£20,000), Colchester and Tendring Women’s Refuge (£33,148), Colchester CAP Debt Centre (£6,000), Citizens Advice Bureau (£25,000), Age Concern Colchester (£23,000), Action for Carers (£23,027), Youth Enquiry Service (£28,000), Cockpits Wood Trust (£5,700), Signals (£22,300) and Gateway (£21,220).

Councillor Tina Bourne, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: “It was incredibly difficult deciding which organisations to award this year’s Voluntary Welfare Grant to as we received so many fantastic applications to support local community groups.

“I’d like to congratulate all ten organisations who were successful and I’m really looking forward to seeing the great work that will take place in the borough over the coming year as a result of this funding.”

This funding opportunity aims to support services that help to address and complement Colchester Borough Council's own strategic aims and is offered to local organisations annually.

The Voluntary Welfare Grant supports the Council’s Better Colchester campaign, which aims to make Colchester a better place to live in, work in and visit.
