Residents Sarah Sherratt, Elisa Vasquez-Walters and Debra White have been announced as the final winners of the Colchester Plastic Pledge competition.

The winners, who have all made pledges to reduce their use of single-use plastics, were selected at random and have each won reusable bottles and bags kindly donated by livewell.

Colchester Borough Council’s Colchester Plastic Pledge campaign actively encourages residents and other local organisations to be plastic aware and follow the council’s example by making their own online pledge to reduce their use of single-use plastics.

Since the campaign launched in October, almost 150 residents have submitted a Colchester Plastic Pledge with the three most popular pledges being to use reusable bottles, their own reusable food containers for packed lunches and to stop using plastic straws.

The Colchester Plastic Pledge campaign is part of the Council’s drive to help the environment by reducing waste, and in particular plastic waste. It also supports the Council’s Better Colchester campaign which aims to make the borough an even better place to live, work and visit.

Councillor David King, Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: “'I would like to thank everyone who has made a success of our Colchester Plastic Pledge campaign. Each household making such a change reduces plastics and waste, sets an example and encourages others.

“Although the competitions have now ended, as an organisation we will continue to look at ways which we all can help reduce the use of single-use plastics. My priority now will be to establish how well businesses are doing. Some have made the changes needed but we need more to commit to phase out plastics, wherever they can and soon.”

Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Environment and Transportation, said: “The BBC’s Blue Planet 2 series and subsequent media has done a fantastic job in raising awareness of the impact plastics can have on the environment. We can all help to address this issue by taking steps, such as making a pledge and I would urge residents and organisations to consider what changes, however small, they could take to reduce single-use plastics and make a Colchester.”

Any resident or local organisation wanting to pledge to reduce their use of single-use plastics can still do so at colchester.gov.uk/colplasticpledge.
