Colchester Borough Council has awarded the contract for the main build element of the flagship Northern Gateway development to R G Carter, following a competitive tender process.

The Chelmsford-based company has delivered similar developments along with other commercial projects for many clients across the UK.

Councillor Mark Cory, Leader of Colchester Borough Council commented on the contractor appointment: “RG Carter’s appointment reflects their proven track-record in delivering major and complex developments to the high quality and exacting standards expected by the council and Northern Gateway’s development team, Colchester Amphora Trading.

“We look forward to working with them in delivering the much-anticipated sports and leisure park to the residents of Colchester and the surrounding area.”

James Wilson, Director and General Manager at R G Carter, added: “R G Carter is delighted to be collaborating with Colchester Borough Council and is proud to play a part in the town’s vision for growth and innovation. We look forward to successfully delivering a first-class, high-quality facility that will serve the local community for many years to come.”

The initial phase of the development comprises 76-acres of innovative and exciting sports and leisure facilities and will deliver a cycling track, sports centre, archery range and outdoor mixed-use leisure spaces. The sports centre design includes a gym, studio space, sports hall (to be utilised as a regional hub for cricket and badminton), and an on-site café.

In addition, a new and high specification clubhouse will be created for Colchester Rugby Club, with floodlit 3G and natural grass pitches, allowing ample space and facilities for the club’s well-attended senior rugby matches and equally popular youth and mini rugby.

Construction is due to start in early 2019, with Colchester Amphora Trading managing the build of the development.
