Colchester Borough Council’s Cabinet agreed last night (21 November, 2018) that its current Local Council Tax Support (LCTS) scheme, which this year has helped 10,000 residents and provided around £8 million of support, remains the same for 2019-20.
Colchester’s current LCTS scheme includes providing support to eligible households where someone starts a new job. This includes providing continued assistance until four weeks after they start work, covering them until they receive their first pay packet.
The 2019-20 LCTS scheme has already been considered by the council’s Scrutiny Panel and will now be discussed by Full Council on 6 December, with a proposed implementation date of 1 April 2019.
The decision also supports the council’s Better Colchester campaign which aims to make Colchester a better place to live, work and visit.
Councillor David King, Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: “Despite the continuing cuts in the government funding that we receive to run our services, we remain committed to supporting the most vulnerable members of our community and providing a better Colchester.
“The help we provide through our Local Council Tax Support scheme is just one way in which we are achieving this aim. We have prevented any cuts to this essential scheme and have recommended the level of support is maintained unchanged.”
