A new cross party Heritage Task and Finish Group, formed as part of the Better Colchester campaign, has met for the first time to discuss new ideas for promoting Colchester’s heritage.
The cross party group agreed in their first meeting for their chairman to be Cllr Darius Laws, and for their deputy chairman to be Cllr Lyn Barton for the municipal year.
The other members of the Heritage Task and Finish Group are Cllr Nick Cope, Cllr Adam Fox, Cllr Patricia Moore, Cllr Lee Scordis and Cllr Beverley Oxford.
As determined at the Cabinet meeting in July 2018 the terms of reference for the group are to: assess opportunities for further promotion of our heritage sites and to bring forward new and innovative ideas to Cabinet.
Furthermore, resources will be allocated to provide costed and developed business plans for the most suitable schemes and successful projects will promote civic pride and increase public engagement in our heritage.
At their first meeting the group discussed sites of particular historical interest, funding opportunities and a lighting strategy for the town centre.
Cllr Darius Laws said “Every Councillor has signed up to the agenda of seeking to enhance and promote our heritage offering in order to attract tourists and make the most of our historic borough. I'm really excited and genuinely believe that this Task Force will develop and present ideas which will be of benefit to all”.
Cllr Tim Young, Portfolio Holder for Business and Culture and Deputy Leader of the Council, said “Celebrating Colchester’s fantastic heritage is an important part of our Better Colchester campaign.
“I’m really pleased to have such a dedicated group of people working together towards a goal that’s important to all of us. I’m looking forward to seeing the great stuff that comes out of this group”.
The group will now meet every six to eight weeks at the Town Hall.
