Colchester Borough Council unveiled the first mural in St Mary’s Car Park at the beginning of October, and now the second mural is due to be started tomorrow (Friday 19 October 2018).
The second mural, which will be painted for free by the same local artist (who does not wish to be named), will span the south stairwell of the car park. The artist will take inspiration from Colchester’s Roman history and will include Roman soldiers.
Work to create the second mural will start on 19 October and is planned to be completed by mid-spring 2019. The south stairwell will be closed whilst painting takes place and signage will be in place to direct users of the car park to an alternative exit.
The mural artist said: “It’s been great to see all the positive comments about my mural in the north stairwell I’m delighted to have the opportunity to paint the south stairwell with a Roman theme.”
Cllr Mike Lilley, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Public Safety and Licensing, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to collaborate with the same artist to create this second history-inspired mural in St Mary’s Car Park. The first mural really has brightened up what was a very dull staircase, and I can’t wait to see what the Roman one will look like.
“I hope that by highlighting the town’s history in this way people’s pride in their community will grow, making a Better Colchester.”
The murals are part of a series of improvement works for St Mary’s and St John’s Car Parks that has taken place over the summer. These included improved LED lighting, new painted steel window frames and work to close off spaces under stairwells to turn them into solid walls – in both car parks.
