Colchester Borough Council is refurbishing ‘Jemima’s Corner’, the baby area in the Garden of Remembrance at Colchester Cemetery. The refurbishment is due to finish in December 2018.
The much-loved Jemima’s Corner is now over 20 years old and needs refurbishment to give grieving families a quality place to remember their loved ones.
The refurbished area will feature a new type of structure that will include light oak wooden supports with a cream canopy, slatted screens on three sides, and simple benches in toning wood. Inside the structure, the existing memorial name tower will remain.
The improvements to Jemima’s Corner will keep families dry during their visits and will make it lighter, airier and more welcoming. The refurbishment will also ensure that the space will be easier to maintain going forwards.
Cllr Beverley Oxford, Portfolio Holder for Customers, said: “The loss of a baby is truly unimaginable. When a family comes to grieve the loss of life, we want to ensure that the surroundings are as peaceful and as respectful as possible.
“As well as refurbishing Jemima’s Corner, we will be adding a new columbarium to the memorial name tower, and a lovely new granite structure will house the teddies and tributes left by families in memory of their beloved babies.”
