As part of Colchester Borough Council’s commemoration of the end of the Great War in November 1918, Philip Wise from Colchester and Ipswich Museums will be giving a talk about Colchester’s war memorials to accompany the temporary exhibition ‘Colchester in the First World War’ currently on display in Colchester Castle.
Colchester’s war memorials range from the well-known at Castle Park to lesser known examples from the town’s historic buildings and churches. The remarkable stories behind their creation in the 1920s will be explored and their designs considered in the context of the art styles of the time.
The talk will take place in Colchester Castle’s Charles Grey Room on Saturday 3 November at 3.00 pm. It is a free event, following admission to the Castle, but donations will be requested to support the research work of the museum.
Cllr Tim Young, Portfolio Holder for Business and Culture and Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “Colchester played a vital role in the war effort due to its proximity to the front line and this exhibition and talk shows the deep pride that the town still feels in its contribution.
“I would urge as many people as possible to attend the event to learn more about how the town and its people have remembered the Great War up to the present day.
“Events like this help support the work Colchester Museums does to preserve our rich heritage for generations to come and build a Better Colchester.”
