Judges from the Green Flag Awards have had their say and, in July, Colchester’s Castle Park, High Woods Country Park and Colchester Cemetery and Crematorium were given a prestigious Green Flag Award.

Now, the Award Scheme is asking the nation to have its say and decide which parks and green spaces should receive the People’s Choice Award for being the UK’s favourites.

Voting opens 1 September and closes 30 September, with the top 10 sites being announced on 16 October.

Cllr Tina Bourne, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: “We are immensely proud of our parks and green spaces and Colchester’s Castle Park, High Woods Country Park and Colchester Cemetery and Crematorium truly deserve their Green Flag Awards.

“Now we’d love all those who enjoy visiting them, whether to unwind, play sport, picnic or get close to nature, to cast a vote for their favourite and help us put Colchester’s wonderful open space on the UK map!”

Councillor Beverley Oxford, Portfolio Holder for Customers, said: “The People’s Choice is a great opportunity to celebrate Colchester’s green spaces which are so diverse – from the beautiful riverside walks and floral displays of Castle Park, to the Victorian landscaping and mature trees and shrubs within our 64-acre cemetery grounds or the lakes, woodlands and wildflower meadows of High Woods Country Park. Let’s all get voting today!”

Green Flag Awards, now into their third decade, are a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Paul Todd, Green Flag Award Manager, said: “This year 1,883 parks and green spaces met the tough standards demanded by our Green Flag Award judges, but we want to know which parks the UK public love the most.

“The People’s Choice award is a chance to show how much your favourite park means to you. If it’s worth shouting about, make your voice heard and vote now.”

To vote, visit www.greenflagaward.org, find your park on the winners’ map and click the voting button. Once you’ve registered your vote, why not encourage others to get involved too through social media using the hashtag #PeoplesChoice.
