The skills, hard work and commitment of the Colchester Museums Visitor Services Team has been recognised, after they scooped top prize at the inaugural Visitor Experience Awards ceremony held in London last week.

The team bagged the Visitor Experience Team of the Year award, beating off competition from the Houses of Parliament, National Museums Liverpool and Cornwall's Regimental Museum.

The Visitor Experience Awards recognise teams that have developed and consistently delivered excellent service to their visitors, who have worked cohesively and done everything they can to enhance visitor experiences and surpass expectations.

Colchester Museums Visitor Services team welcomes visitors to Colchester Castle, Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum, which in 2017/18 totalled over 170,000 people. They also deliver tours to school groups, and manage conferences and weddings. In addition, part of their role is to oversee the security of the historic buildings and the collections housed in them, to ensure they are protected for future generations.

Cllr Tim Young, Portfolio Holder for Business and Culture and Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “It really is a huge honour for the team to win this award ahead of such illustrious competition and is richly deserved.

“Our museum staff work tirelessly to ensure the visitor experience is enjoyable and educational for all ages. Whether a visitor attends Colchester Castle, Hollytrees Museum or the Natural History Museum, our friendly and informative team is always there to help guide and make that visitor experience first class for a Better Colchester.

“The team has so much passion, drive and ambition, and it is fantastic to see this recognised with this award.”

The Visitor Experience Awards are new to 2018 and hosted by The Visitor Experience Forum. The Visitor Experience Forum facilitates networking events for those involved in the creation of visitor, guest or customer experience, and is quickly establishing itself as a prestigious body for those working in the visitor experience industry.

The winners were announced at a glittering evening reception at Wellcome Collection in London, on 8 August.
