We Are Colchester – thought-provoking NEW exhibition to open at Hollytrees Museum this weekend

PUBLISHED: 24 July 2018

Hollytrees Museum in Colchester will host a new and exciting exhibition entitled We are Colchesterfrom the 28 July. Running until the 29 January 2019 the temporary exhibition will be focusing on the theme of Identity.

A person’s identity is often defined by aspects such as gender, sexuality, ethnicity and religion. However, what makes us individuals is the unique blend of these elements and how they shape our lives.

The new exhibition will be exploring the identities of Colchester residents through their possessions, alongside objects from the Colchester Museums collections that show how people have used objects to reflect their identity throughout the town’s history.

This ground-breaking exhibition is expected to provoke thought and challenge visitor's assumptions about people's identity and social stereotypes.

Cllr Tim Young, Portfolio Holder for Business and Culture and Deputy Leader of the Council said: “This new exhibition looks set to be a fascinating take on how individuals think and feel, and how individuals' possessions play a part in what makes up a person. We are hoping the exhibition will provoke people to stop and think about what makes us unique and promote interesting discussions.

“With the exhibition running until January 2019 there is plenty of time to visit and to encourage as many friends and family to visit as well. The exhibition is free to attend so please head to Hollytrees Museum to take part in something very special.”
